Why is my first backup taking so long?
The initial backup will always take the longest. The initial backup uploads your files in thier entirety. Subsequent backups will only upload the changes IN your files, not the files, so daily backups will run much quicker.
Other factors include the speed of your upload, the amount of data that you selected for backup, and your computer’s processing speed.
Subterranean backs up data at the rate of about 2 to 4 GB per day for your initial backup. However, if you have a fast connection and left undisturbed, you can backup upto 8 to 9 GB in a single day.
My backup seems stuck, what do I do?
If your backup seems to be stuck for a long time with no data being transferred at all, you can cancel the backup from the Subterranean application and restart the backup manually from the application interface. Right click the Subterranean Icon in the Systray (lower right corner by your clock), click "Show Currently Running Backup". That will bring up the upload interface. Click the Cancel button.
On very large files being backed up, such as a 10GB file, it could take 5 or 10 minutes for our servers to process the file being continuing on with the upload. This is especially true on the intial upload of the file.
Can Subterranean Online Backup backup SQL databases?
Yes. There are 3 methods available.
1. Backup SQL live using our ServerSave Service. Click Here for ServerSave info. A new window will open up.
2. Use SQL Server Management Studio for Full or Differential backups of SQL databases, followed by Subterranean Online Backup backing up the SQL Backup File(s). The SQL backups file(s) should be saved to a local folder on your server or another network location.
--- To address the concern with the Subterranean Client running a new backup of the SQL Database file daily, have the SQL management Studio use the same file name for every backup. (i.e. no date stamp in the file name).Using that method, Subterranean will only backup the Delta (change IN the file)to each SQL backup file.
--- When there is a need to recover the SQL Database, you can simply use Subterranean Online Backup to recover the applicable SQL Backup File reverting back to any date and time when a backup was run. After recovering the SQL Backup File from the Subterranean Online Backup system, you can open the SQL Server Management Studio and recover the applicable SQL database.
3. If you are not concerned about a transactional based SQL Backup with Logs, you can simply use the Subterranean Online Backup Client to backup a SQL database (VSS is used in the background with Subterranean). Using Subterranean Online Backup to backup an SQL database directly will only create a copy. The Subterranean Online Backup Client will not truncate SQL Logs.
--- When there is a need to recover the SQL Database, you would restore the copy of the SQL database from the Subterranean Online Backup System, then replace and overwrite the existing SQL database.
How do I see how much data is backed up on my account?
To see the used space on your account, login to Subterranean Online Backup Client (Start--→ Programs--→ Subterranean Online Backup), click on Advanced (upper right corner), then Classic View. On the right side, click on “Refresh”. If you look at the bottom or on the right side, you will see “Used Space” with the size of data on our servers. Which can be larger than your account size. If used space is larger than your account size, that is good, because your account is based on the size of data your SELECT to backup, not how much data you have stored with us. We keep every backup date, every backed up file, and every backed up folder for 13 years at no extra charge. You can easily have 200GB of data stored with us, yet only have a 20GB account.
How do I add second computer to my account?
Adding a second computer is quite simple. All you would need to do is install Subterranean on the second computer. Login in with your existing user name and password and setup your backups. Make sure the total amount of data SELECTED on all the computers being backed up is less than your account size, otherwise you will receive a "Too Much Data Selected For Backup" error during the backup. If that occurs, either select less data of increase your account size. There are links in the Subterranean Software for "Get More Online Storage" or log-in to your Subterranean Account via our home page. Look for the "Web Login" button, or Click Here To Login.

Can I run mutiple Subterranean accounts on 1 machine?
Yes, multiple accounts can be run on one machine. The same client software will log in different accounts provided the correct username and password are provided. The best way to use two accounts on one machine is to have the first account finish its scheduled backup before the second account starts its scheduled backup, although not necessary.
Can I use a single Subterranean Backup account on mutiple computers?
Yes, you can use a single account on multiple computers. You should make sure that the backup set sizes (amount selected for backup), when totaled together, do not exceed your subscribed storage size. If that occurs, either increase your account size or select less data to backup.

How do I know what needs to be backed up?
Any file, the loss of which would cause the data owner to suffer from business loss or personal suffering, should be backed up. Don't let the small size of a file fool you into thinking it is not important.
What if my files are in a folder of all mixed types and I only want certain types Protected in my account?
Open up Subterrean Online Backup in Wizard mode. In the upper right hand corner click "Advanced". Click Options. You should now be in the "Protected Files Type" page for setting Cloaking. Three Cloaking settign are available.
No cloaking / Files to NOT backup / Files to ONLY backup.
These three settings described above are basically file-type filters - used to select a particular type of file in a folder to backup or ignore during backup.
For example, most clients select "Files to NOT backup". Then add ".sys.msi.exe.dll.dl_.hlp." (without the quotes) to the Custom Mask box. With that setting, files ending in the selected extensions will NOT be backed up. They will be "skipped".
What happens to my backed up files on your servers if I delete the files from the my backed up computer?
Nothing will happen to your files which exist on our server, that is the beauty of Subterranean Online Services. The files will still sit on our server and you can restore them anytime you want. Other backup providers will delete the files on their server, if they are deleted from your backed up computer. Our functionality is referred to as ‘archiving’. Archiving for 13 years!
What if a common file on a server is accessed by many during a period, which version will be saved - or will all?
All versions will be backed up. The backup will be saved separately on their own version.
For example, a file called MyDocument.doc exists in a server and 2 machines are connected to the server and access the same file(s).
After Machine A finishes modifying the file, Machine A does a backup. The file will be saved as Machine A\Path\MyDocument.doc version 1.
After Machine B finishes modifying the file, Machine B does a backup. The file will be saved as Machine B\Path\MyDocument.doc version 1.
When the server does the backup, the file will be backed up as Server\Path\MyDocument.doc version 1.
How do I add folders and files to the list of what is backed up?
After logging in Subterranean Online Backup client software, the user can decide whether to use the Classic View (from the dropdown on the top right corner of the software display screen) or the Wizard View, which is the default view after logging in.
a) Wizard View After logging in, application screen consists of four different functions. To find the files which need to be backed up online, select the “Backup Online” option. You can then choose from the tree view which is all the files which have to be backed up. Since it is not advisable to back up system files and folders, make sure that you take time to scroll through the tree view to actually select data files that are important for backup.
b) Classic View
The Classic View offers three different modes for selecting files that need to be backed up. After logging in, click on Classic View from the “Advanced” menu on the top right corner of the application display. In the Classic view, navigate to Backup Mode. There are three different ways to look for data that need to be backed up.
- Drag and Drop Feature
Allows to ‘drag and drop’ a file or folder for backup
- Explore computer
Provides a directory tree view from which files and folders for back up can be selected.
- Search for files
This mode allows you to look for files with specific file extensions. A wide range of selection is available here.
Do I have to select each file for protection individually?
No, entire folders contents can be selected for backup by checking the text box of the folder itself. This also automatically includes any files and subfolders that are subsequently added to the folder.
How can I find a file when I don’t know where to look for it?
You can look for files to back up through the ‘Backup Online’ Wizard option which you can launch after logging in the client software. On step 1 of the wizard, a tree view of the computer’s directory is available for file selection. You can also search for files. After logging in to the client software, on the top right corner of the application display go to ‘Advanced’ menu, select Classic View. Navigate to the Backup Mode and to ‘Search for files’. Look up in the directory for C drive (Most of the .pst files are hidden files) and select the .pst extension.
I accidentally backed up files that I don’t need. How do I get rid of them?
Actually that is not a problem. Your monthly fee is based on the amount of data selected for backup, not the amount of data we have on our servers. Unlike other providers, with Subterranean you simply deselect the data from the backup job. It's that easy. No hassles. No suprises.
If I cancel a running backup will I loose my data?
No, you will not. Canceling a backup will simply stop the backup and any data that has been backed up will be safely stored on our server. When you restart the backup, Subterranean will simply pickup where it left off, at the point when it was canceled.
How to start a manual backup.<
The fastest way to do this would be to login to the Subterranean application, click on "Advanced" in upper right corner, click "Classic View". Now click on the “Backup Mode” tab, and at the bottom click on “Run backup”
How do I receive my username?
Your Subterranean account username is proposed by the registrant at the time of registration. Once registration is completed, an email is sent to your subscribed email address as well. Usernames are unique, and cannot be recycled. Usernames are not case sensitive. However, passwords are case sensitive.
What does UltraSafe mean to me?
This is a feature which can be selected at the time of creating your backup account. When creating an account in UltraSafe mode, the password is irretrievable. For normal accounts, if ever customers forget their passwords, they can still get the passwords emailed to them by going to www.remote-online-backup.com/login and answering the “Forgot Password” question - the answer to which was provided by the registrant at the time of registration. Under UltraSafe mode, your data remains secure, but cannot be retrieved by any means in case of password lost.
Should I choose the “save the password” option at the login screen the Subterranean software presents when it starts?
It is the user’s choice. If the password is not saved at the login screen, scheduled backup already set will run, as will LiveProtect. The option to save the password allows all users that access the workstation(s), where the Subterranean software is installed, to change backup settings. For e.g., an account set up on a server, should usually be accessed only by the systems administration and thus this option would not be checked in this scenario. You have to balance convenience with security.
I have not received an email report after setting up my backup.
Email reports are only generated on the completion of a backup. If your backup is still running in the background or if the program shuts down unexpectedly due to a system failure or reboot, then the program will not be able to generate an email report because it is not running.
Why can’t I see my Outlook .pst file?

How to check a schedule once it is set.
You can check the status of your Subterranean Scheduled Backup by looking at Windows Scheduled tasks. This is the repository of all scheduled tasks on a computer. You can get to the Windows Scheduled Tasks in Windows XP by navigating to Start - Program Files - Accessories - System Tools - Scheduled Tasks.
If you have correctly scheduled a backup with Subterranean Online Backup, there will be an icon with the Subterranean Online Backup logo sitting there. Right click and view properties.
In Vista and Windows 7, you can check your Subterranean Backup Schedule by looking as Task Scheduler. You can get to task scheduler by navigating to Start. Now type in "Task Scheduler" (without the quotes) in the white search box and hit Enter. That will open Task Scheduler. Click on "Task Scheduler Library". That will list all the tasks. Find a task named "Subterranean Online Backup". Right click on it, and select properties.
How to re-set a schedule to another time.
When logging into the client software, select “Backup Online”. If the backup set remains the same and you only wish to change the schedule, then do not have to do anything on step 1. Click next and move on to step 2. This is where you can change the time, frequency of a scheduled backup. Click on Next once the correct settings have been entered.
What is the difference between running on a schedule and running with no user logged on?
In a normal PC or laptop, there is always an account logged on for the computer to function. However, if the user logs off at night (typical backup time) the Scheduler can be set to run without a user looged on. A user with Administrator rights must be logged on in order to actually set the backup schedule to run when no user is logged on. One way around this is to either stay logged on at night, or "Lock" the computer instead of logging off.
In using a server there is usually no user account logged on to the server directly, which means you will have to provide the domain name of the domain to which the server belongs and also the login credentials to log into the server in order to have the scheduler run, thus the backup run, when no user is logged on.
How can I share a file?
To share a file/folder, you can use MyAccount facility which is available from our website or here: My Account
Log in to your account using your username and password and then select the “Online Recovery” link. There will be a list of machines from which you have done your backup so far, drill down to which files/folders you want to share and then select the “SHARE/RECOVER” link on the right of the table.
Can a recipient of a shared file re-upload the file?
No. The file recipient can not re-upload the files/folders using the web facility. The recipient needs to have a Subterranean Client account and software to upload the files/folders. This will upload the files to the account on that machine.
What happens to my backed up files if I de-select files/folders from from the session check list (backup job)?
Nothing will happen to your backed up files.
You only removed them from the session checklist (backup job), which means those files won’t be backed up in the next backup session. If you have done backup(s) for those files before, the backup(s) will remain in our system for 13 years. This is in contrast to The Other Guys, they will delete your files from their servers./p>
