Text Box: THE PREMIER ONLINE BACKUP PROVIDER
SINCE 1999

A BACKUP LIKE NO OTHER

What Is Subterranean Remote Online Backup?

A service that performs automated scheduled backups of your data - transferring your data to our remote secure data centers. Each night, our free backup software “wakes up” on your computer, copies the data you've selected to protect, compresses the data, encrypts the data, connects to the Internet, then transfers your data to one of our data centers.  Now your important data is off-site, protected, and recoverable using our software or any web browser such as Internet Explorer.

Can You Explain Subterranean Remote Backup In A Little More Detail?

Our Remote Online Backup is an automated 3 step process.

In step 1, the data you selected to protect is broken into small data packages, integrity stamped, encrypted, compressed, integrity stamped again – now ready for transport to our data centers, from your computer.

In step 2, the compressed data packages are encrypted again and then transmitted to our data centers via your Internet connection.

In step 3, the final step, the data packages arrive at our data center, followed by integrity checks. If the integrity checks fail, the data packages are re-sent. If the integrity checks pass, the data packages are encrypted again, time and date stamped, and then added to your backup for the day. All backups are initiated from your PC. Your PC does all the work, for security reasons.

How Long Will It Take To Perform A Backup?

That depends on many factors. The initial "big push" (or "baseline backup") really depends on the data you have selected to backup and your Internet speed. We compress your data before pushing it - some data compresses better than others, as such some data is backed up faster. For example, spreadsheets compress great, pictures do not. We recommend customers do their full baseline backup on a Friday night. Also, there is a "physical media upload" tool built in to our software. To use the physical media upload, we would ship you a portable USB hard drive – you would backup to that hard drive using the “physical media upload” option - send us the hard drive back - and then we perform the “Baseline Backup” for you. Great for 10GB backups and larger.

Can I Share The Files I Backup?

YES. You can share any backed up file, from anywhere in the world using just a web-browser - at no cost to you. Great for files too large for email. Very few online backup providers offer the service.

Text Box: STORAGE PLANS AND STORAGE SIZE

How Do I Know Which Storage Plan To Sign Up For?

We kept it simple - no guess work. We charge for the amount of data you SELECT to backup - period. So from day 1, you know your costs. As an added no cost bonus, we keep ALL our clients backed up data forever. That means our clients can restore the files they backup today, 2, 3, or even 5 years from now. Other providers charge for the amount of data stored on their servers - the more file changes that occur, the larger your storage size becomes with the other providers, finally arriving at such a large storage size your OLD backup data has to be deleted. Another way to look at their service - you are penalized for changing your files.

How Much Should I Expect My Data Storage Size?

Doesn't matter how big your storage size becomes with our service, because we only charge by the amount of data you SELECT to backup. Other providers charge by the amount of data you store, which can be huge if they are using old incremental technology — it can be has large as double the size in the first week, and 12 times larger by week 6.

How Many Backup Copies of My Files Do You Retain, and Why Would I Care?

We keep all your backed up files (versions) at NO COST to you. You can restore today's backed up files, 1, 2, or even 5 years from now. Typical with other online backup providers is to keep the last 30 to 45 days of backed up data and charge you for it. Restoring from longer than 45 days ago is sometimes required for legal reasons and is always a money saver when you need that old old file after a crash.

Won’t Keeping All The Copies Of My Data Increase My Monthly Cost?

NO. That is the beauty of our online backup service. You are ONLY charged for the amount of data you select to backup. Other providers charge their clients by the amount of data stored on their servers – which means they have to limit their client’s version history (copies of their data) to the last 30-45 days. A few providers actually limit their clients to 1 version (copy).

Text Box: COSTS

How Do I Figure Costs?

We keep it very simple. You are charged for the amount of data you SELECT to backup - period. Other providers will charge for the amount of data stored on their servers, which means - the more files their change each week, the larger the data storage size becomes on their server, thus the larger their clients monthly costs.

Do You Charge For Restoring My Data?

NO.  You can restore as many times as you need at no cost.

Do You Charge For Backing Up My Data?

NO.  We only charge for the amount of data you SELECTED to backup. So backup as many times as you need, change files, rename files, move files....your cost will remain the same - not so with the other providers.

How Much Does Your Service Cost?

Our service starts at $2.50/GB per month based on the amount of data selected for backup, not how much data is stored on our servers.  The price includes UNLIMITED number of backups kept on our servers. Typical in the industry is to charge by the amount of data on the servers, then limit the number of backups kept for restore to the last 30-45 days.

Text Box: WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT THE BACKUP TECHNOLOGY USED?

In Simple Terms, What Are The Differences In ONLINE Backup Technology?

Your eventual storage size (cost) and reliability of the service are 2 reasons for being concerned about different backup technologies. Most providers use the same backup technology as tapes – incremental. That means your changed files are backed up over and over, increasing your storage size dramatically, increasing the chances of something going wrong, and increasing you costs. Our Technology only backs up the changes that occurred IN the files, the 1's and 0's.  For example: Change a name within your Word document, we backup the name only, whereas, Incremental Technology (same as tapes) will backup the entire file.  Add a new invoice within QuickBooks, we backup just the new invoice. Incremental Technology backs up the entire QuickBooks file. The majority of online backup providers use incremental technology, same as backup tapes.

Is There An Easy Way To Tell What Technology Providers Are Using?

Yes. Check their web site out. If their Web Site does not explain the technology they use, it’s highly likely they are using incremental backup technology – the same technology that tape backups use.

Can I Restore Just 1 File or Do I have to Restore Everything?

You can restore as few or as many files or folders as you like from as far back as your very first backup, since we keep ALL your backups. There are some providers that will require you to restore all your files or nothing.

How Far Back In Time Can I Restore From?

From the very first backup. We keep all your backups of your protected files. Almost all online backup providers limit your restores to just the last 30-45 backups. There are a even few that limit your storage to just yesterday's backup.

How Do I Restore?

Open up our program. Click Restore on the wizard. Select a date to restore from, the file(s) or folders to restore, select the destination you want to restore to, click restore. Set back and relax.
